Process

US B1/B2 visitor visa — step by step

The B1/B2 is a single visa for business and tourism. Most applicants now skip the interview only if they meet the interview-waiver criteria; first-time applicants attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate.

1

Complete DS-160 online

Fill the DS-160 on the official portal (ceac.state.gov). Use the same name spelling as in your passport. Save the confirmation page with the barcode — you bring it to the interview. Answering inconsistently with your profile or social media handles can trigger refusal.

2

Pay the MRV fee

Pay the non-refundable $185 visa application fee. Keep the receipt number — it is required to schedule. Fee validity for booking is typically 1 year from payment.

Prepare supporting evidence

Passport valid 6+ months beyond stay, DS-160 confirmation, photo meeting exact specs, fee receipt, and evidence of strong ties to your home country (job, property, family, finances) plus purpose and ability to pay for the trip. Avoid fake or unverifiable documents.

Where you are most likely to get stuck

  • !Looking like an intending immigrant is the top refusal reason — bring clear home-country ties.
  • !Beware of look-alike agencies charging for DS-160 "help"; only the official site is free and valid.
  • !Administrative processing (221g) can take weeks with no guaranteed timeline.
  • !A 10-year multiple entry does not guarantee long stays — each entry is up to the CBP officer (often up to 6 months).
