Iceland Northern Lights & Ring Road guide

86trust

Schengen visa entry, Northern Lights Sep–Mar, Ring Road self-drive 7 days — Blue Lagoon to Diamond Beach to black sand beaches, the complete preparation guide.

01

🛬Entry & visa

Chinese passport holders need a Schengen visa (Type C tourist) in advance — apply through VFS Global or the embassy of your main Schengen destination. Iceland is in the Schengen area: the 90/180 rolling window applies — max 90 days cumulative in any 180-day period. Apply 1-2 months ahead; you need travel insurance (€30,000+ coverage), itinerary, accommodation bookings and bank statements.

🏛️Must-visit highlights

Golden Circle: the classic day trip. Þingvellir National Park — walk between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates in Almannagjá gorge, free; Geysir — Strokkur erupts every 5-10 min, free; Gullfoss — double-tiered waterfall, free. About 300 km total, self-drive or tour 12,000-15,000 ISK.

03

🍜Must-try foods

Pylsur (Icelandic hot dog): the national fast food. Lamb+beef+pork blend with raw onion, crispy onion, mustard, ketchup and remoulade. Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur near the harbour has been queuing for 60 years, 600-900 ISK each. Gas station hot dogs are also excellent.

Kjötsúpa (lamb soup): traditional winter warmer — lamb, potato, carrot, kale. 1,800-2,500 ISK a bowl, many places offer free refills.

Humarsúpa (lobster soup): Iceland's signature — creamy soup with langoustine tail meat. Sea Baron (Sægreifur) in Reykjavík, small bowl 3,900 ISK, worth it.

Skyr: Viking-era cultured skim milk, high protein low fat. Supermarket 300-500 ISK per tub, flavours include vanilla, blueberry, coconut. Makes a great breakfast.

Rúgbrauð (rye bread): geothermal-baked, sweet and dense, served with smoked lamb or butter. Supermarket 500-800 ISK a loaf. Some spa villages steam-bake it in hot springs for 12 hours.

Þorskur (cod): North Atlantic cod, pan-fried or grilled. Restaurant main 3,000-5,000 ISK. Icelandic fish is always fresh.

Hákarl (fermented shark): Greenland shark fermented for months, strong ammonia smell — an acquired taste. Small portion 1,500-2,000 ISK with brennivín schnapps. Not for everyone.

Kanelbullar (cinnamon rolls): Nordic-style, 500-700 ISK with coffee at cafés, afternoon staple.

04

🚇Getting around

Airport to city: Flybus from Keflavík to Reykjavík BSI terminal, 45 min, 3,499 ISK; Flybus+ drops at hotels 4,499 ISK. Bus 55 goes to BSI for 1,900 ISK but takes 70 min with stops. Late-night Shuttle for red-eye arrivals.

🛍️Shopping spots

Lopapeysa (Icelandic wool sweater): the iconic circular-yoke jumper, hand-knit from lopi wool. Handknitting Association of Iceland shop in Reykjavík 25,000-45,000 ISK; factory-made 10,000-15,000 ISK but not hand-knit. Look for "Handknitted in Iceland" on the collar tag.

06

🏨Where to stay

Camping: the cheapest option. Iceland campsites (see camping.is) have kitchens, showers, electricity, 2,000-3,500 ISK/person/night. Bring your own tent and sleeping bag — viable in summer (Jun-Aug), not in winter deep-freeze. Roadside wild camping is illegal — you must use designated sites.

07

💰Money-saving tips

Exchange: 1 USD ≈ 140 ISK, 1 EUR ≈ 150 ISK, 1 RMB ≈ 19 ISK. Iceland is one of Europe's priciest destinations — mid-range 30,000-50,000 ISK/person/day (stay + food + car share), backpacker 12,000-20,000 ISK.

08

⚠️Common pitfalls

Weather whiplash: Iceland has "four seasons in a day" — mountain and coastal weather can shift from sun to blizzard in 10 minutes. Always check vedur.is (weather) and road.is (road conditions) before driving. Winter storms can close roads for hours or days — build buffer time.

F-roads need 4WD: F-numbered roads (e.g. F208 to Landmannalaugar) are only open in summer (Jun-Aug) and require 4WD. Taking a 2WD on an F-road is illegal and voids your insurance — any accident is fully your liability. The rental contract lists prohibited roads.

Reynisfjara killer waves: the black sand beach has deadly sneaker waves that surge without warning — tourists die here every year. Stay 15+ metres from the waterline, watch the tide, never turn your back to the sea for photos. Obey warning signs.

Alcohol is state-monopolised: supermarkets don't sell alcohol — only Vínbúðin state liquor stores. Short hours (weekdays 11-18, Sat 11-14, Sun closed). Bar and restaurant alcohol is very expensive (beer 1,500-2,500 ISK/pint). Airport duty-free is cheapest.

Aurora is not guaranteed: Northern Lights need three conditions — darkness (Sep-Mar), clear skies, and high KP index. KP 3+ gives a decent chance. Allow 4-5 nights in a rural area to wait it out. Self-driving is more flexible than tours — you can chase clear patches.

Sheep on roads: Icelandic sheep roam free along roadsides in summer and autumn and may bolt onto the road. Speed limit is 90 km/h but slow down on bends. Hitting a sheep requires reporting and compensation. East fjords and northern routes have the highest sheep density.

09

🎉Major festivals & events

Reykjavík Winter Lights Festival: first weekend of February — city-wide light installations and outdoor events. Short days and long nights make light projections on major buildings stunning. Free. Also a good aurora season.
