1 · Verdict: a visa is required

Verdict

Visa required

Chinese passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling to Japan; short-term tourism uses a single- or multiple-entry tourist visa.

Applies to short tourist visits up to 15 days (single entry); those meeting income criteria may receive a 3-year multiple-entry visa (30 days per visit). Business, family and study purposes are out of scope here.

  • ◆Single-entry tourist visa: one entry, stay usually up to 15 days.
  • ◆Multiple-entry tourist visa (3-year): multiple visits within 3 years, 30 days each; higher income/assets required.
  • ◆Passport must be valid 6+ months with blank visa pages.

    7 · Refusal risks & exceptions

    Main refusal reasons

    • Bank balance too low or a sudden large deposit right before applying
    • Employment cert informal, employer unverifiable or contradicting the bank record
    • Itinerary vague or unrealistic (city-hopping, overpacked days)
    • Fraudulent documents — leads to refusal and possibly a long ban
    • Suspected overstay risk or non-tourism purpose

    Favourable factors / exceptions

    • Travel history to developed countries (US, CA, AU, Schengen…)
    • Stable income meeting the threshold → eligible for 3-year multiple
    • Complete documents, genuine bank record spanning 6+ months
    • Reasonable itinerary with verifiable hotel & flight bookings
    • A valid US/AU/CA/Schengen visa generally helps assessment

    8 · After approval

    • Travel insurance

Cover the whole stay for medical and accidents; some policies include lost documents and delays. Japanese medical costs are high — insurance is worth it.

    • Accommodation & transport

Confirm hotel bookings for the whole stay; get an IC card (Suica/PASMO) or JR Pass in advance, and book shinkansen early for intercity legs.

    • Entry documents

Carry: passport (with visa), return ticket, accommodation address, proof of funds. Complete immigration & customs on Visit Japan Web beforehand to speed up entry.

    9 · Traveller tips

    User experience · not official

Shared by community travellers — not official requirements; weigh against your own situation.

    • ◆Keep a stable balance for 6+ months; avoid large transfers right before applying.
    • ◆Leave slack in the itinerary — don't pack every day; the consulate looks for reasonableness.
    • ◆Multiple-entry typically needs ~¥250k annual income or a tax certificate — prepare early.
    • ◆Start 2–3 months ahead and avoid pre-holiday peaks.
    • ◆VFS appointments are first-come; weekday mornings are usually quieter.
